California Supreme Court Names New Director of Civil Central Staff

By Merrill Balassone March 20, 2025

The California Supreme Court has named Erin Rosenberg as the new director of its Civil Central Staff, effective May 5. Rosenberg replaces Lisa Walker, the staff’s director since 2018, who will retire after serving the court for nearly 30 years.

Rosenberg has been with the California Supreme Court for 10 years, serving first as a research attorney on Civil Central Staff and later as a chambers attorney for both Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero and former Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye.

Said Chief Justice Guerrero: “Erin brings a decade of dedicated service to the California Supreme Court to this new role. The justices look forward to Erin’s leadership supporting the court’s work on civil cases.”

Rosenberg, a graduate of UCLA and UC Davis School of Law, was admitted to the California Bar in 2009. She helped launch a listserve that connects Supreme Court and appellate attorneys with pro bono volunteer opportunities that meet judicial guidelines.

I am thrilled to return to Civil Central Staff, a team of talented and dedicated attorneys," Rosenberg said. "I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve the court in this new role.”

The court has three central staffs, composed primarily of career attorneys. The 15-member Civil Central Staff assists the justices with civil petitions for review, petitions for writ of mandate, depublication and publication requests, and attorney disciplinary matters.

The Criminal Central Staff addresses petitions for review and habeas corpus petitions in all criminal matters except capital cases. The Capital Central Staff assists the justices in the adjudication of death penalty matters.
