California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin H. Liu will be inducted into the American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS) this fall, in recognition of his contributions to social science, public policy, and public discourse.

Justice Liu will be named the 2025 Roger Wilkins Fellow.

Said Justice Liu: “I am very humbled to be elected to the AAPSS and to receive this honor named for Roger Wilkins, an extraordinary lawyer, historian, journalist, and civic leader. I was lucky to know Roger early in my career, and his example inspired my own dedication to civil rights, public service, and justice for all.”

Justice Liu’s academic expertise lies in constitutional law, educational law and policy, and diversity in the legal profession, and he continues to teach constitutional law as a visiting professor across the country.

Justice Liu joined the California high court in 2011. Before joining the bench, he was professor of law and associate dean at the UC Berkeley School of Law. Justice Liu is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Law Institute, and the American Philosophical Society. In 2023, he was elected chair of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He also serves on the Council of the American Law Institute, on the Board of Directors of the James Irvine Foundation, and as President of the Yale University Council.

The son of Taiwanese immigrants, Justice Liu grew up in Sacramento and attended public schools. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Stanford, a master’s degree in philosophy and physiology from Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, and a law degree from Yale. He clerked for Judge David Tatel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Supreme Court.
